How can a subject like the polar regions be made relevant to museum visitors in the Dutch province of Zeeland? As guest curator, I set out to find people who had spent time in the polar regions but also had a logical connection to Zeeland. Exhibition visitors would find out about the North and South Poles with the help of local people who had actually been there. Some were famous, like Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter who learned to sail in the northern polar region in around 1630; others were less well-known, like a Vlissingen café owner who had gone to the Antarctic as a tourist in 2007. These characters served as guides to the two vast, fascinating and highly contrasting worlds. They helped visitors identify with the big, abstract subject of the exhibition.

In addition, thanks to the trust shown in me by the muZEEum and the freedom I was allowed, I was able to experiment with audio-visual features: a trailer, talking paintings, and a ‘digital afterlife’ for the exhibition. This was an inspiring and educational experience, as was my close collaboration with over fifteen authors on the accompanying popular science publication Tegenpolen. Op expeditie naar contrastrijke poolgebieden (Walburg Pers) – a book containing everything from the memoirs of the last Dutch whale hunter to the most recent research findings from the polar region.

Testimonial

The result exceeded expectations. The non-traditional exhibition worked at many different levels, exploiting a range of technologies and at the same time taking account of visitor needs. I was particularly pleased with the discussions I had with Diederik, which revealed that the various concepts were firmly knowledge-based. He recognized (unusually in my experience) the possibility of translating historical and pedagogical abstractions into practice. (..) The execution, quality and atmosphere of the exhibition were such that third-party professionals said to me that it must be the work of a highly experienced exhibition maker.
